Blueberries

Friday, July 18th, 2008

Before Dwight gets to the subject at hand he must share a photo. This photo was snapped while dropping Motley off to be watched while we visited some friends in Leksand. This is one of things Dwight likes about Sweden. This is outside Olof’s family’s summer house, it has a traditional Dalarna look to it and the tractor added to the image.

Dwight thought perhaps the amount of new things would decrease after a year. However Astrid apparently has been keeping all sorts of activities up her sleeve. For instance today they went a little outside of town on a 5km look through the woods picking blueberries. Dwight didn’t even know blueberries grew on plants, instead believing them to come in cans with the muffin mix. Dwight found fresh blueberry to be preferable to that which comes in the can. Blueberry picking also introduced Dwight to the lingonberry out in the wild, which should be ripe later this summer. Apparently they are easier since they grow in bunches and you can use a claw scoop thing to gather them up.

Kebab Pizza

Wednesday, June 4th, 2008

Scott asked to see more posts of the culinary type and Dwight is happy to oblige. For dinner tonight Astrid went to some baby shower type thing for someone in the ward, so Dwight was on his own. He settled on having a kebab pizza. First off if you are eating in is pizza salad, white cabbage, canola oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Dwight has a picture from last fall from his phone, it’s not focused properly, but it can give you an idea.

Now almost all pizza places in Sweden bar Pizza Hut feature kebab pizzas. The basic is the thin pizza dough base, light on the sauce and cheese and depending on the place onions, tomatoes and/or peppers. After cooking this thinly sliced kebab meat is placed on top with kebab sauce (or in a container if the pizza is to go to be put on later). Also the pizza comes with a couple of ‘pepperoni’ peppers, which can be confusing when an American first looks at the menu, pepperonikorv (pepperoni meat) is fairly rare in Sweden.

The kebab pizza is the number one food item Dwight thinks he would miss about Sweden were he to move. Since Ikea is around in the US and they stock things like lingonberry jam he can scratch most itches.
